Future Of Data Storage: Graphite Memory Demonstrated - Gizmo Watch: "Pumping gigs for storage capacity seems to be the new way in, as Toshiba is to introduce a 512GB SSD at the forthcoming Consumer Electronics Show, and here is a new kind of data storage medium developed to keep in the spree (may be stupid to compare the two, though). It is a layer of graphite only 10 atoms thick demonstrated by researchers at Rice University.
The lab tests show a layer of graphene, 5 nm in diameter, grown atop silicon and used for storing a bit of data. The new storage medium, if researchers are believed, can function in gruesome temperatures of 200 degrees Celsius, and could in capacity be many times the current capacity of flash memory. So, here we are in for a next-generation of memory capable of replacing the NAND flash memory (45nm in size) down to 20 nanometers, size that brains behind NAND believe could be scaled by the flash memory sometime by 2012.
