Nanoribbons To Speedup Computer Chips - Gizmo Watch: "Nano chemists research team of Stanford University have successfully demonstrated that carbon nanoribbons can be used to make transistors which can be integrated into computer chips to increase speed with low heating. Recent study published online in Physical Review Letters and previous one in Science, looks set to revolutionalise new generation computer chips. The research team has demonstrated that nanoribbons made from graphene (a form of carbon made grahite) can be used to make field-effect transistors which are building blocks of computer-chips. This has been attempted before with wider nanoribbons but they worked only at low temperatures. Standford researchers lead by Hongjie Dai have made graphene ribbons less than 10 nanometers wide, which when integrated into transistor can work at room temperature as well."

Transistors Go Atom-sized - Gizmo Watch: "In yet another innovation that could further Moore’s law and make it much more relevant, even in the future, we now have a transistor created by British scientists that rivals an atom in size. The transistor which has dimensions of 1 atom in thickness and 10 atoms in width is made up of a new material called graphene. Graphene is a hybrid material made up of graphite and has a structure like chicken wire. Electrons travel ten times faster in graphene than in silicon and this makes graphene an ideal material to be used by semiconductors of the future. The chicken wire structure also enables better electrical conductivity. These factors in combination with miniaturization makes the new graphene transistor a material that we all could see in electronic gadgets of the future.

Attesting this saying, the scientists at the University of Melbourne in Australia have fashioned world’s smallest diamond ring. They put up their admirable creation on show at the March meeting of the American Physical Society in New Orleans. Being the smallest ever diamond ring, it measures up to a surprising 5 microns only (or millionths of a meter) in diameter and is 300 nanometers (or billionths of a meter) in thickness. The tiny ring is made by carving out a circular structure in an artificially made diamond.
Moreover, the scientists developing quantum information processing are going to be extremely benefited by the ring. The scientists illustrate the ring being a component in a device for producing and detecting single photons (particles of light) that come out of an infinitesimal impurity region inside the diamond carry information. As in common digital computers, information is stocked up in bits having a value of either “1″ or “0″ (just as a light switch can only be “on” or “off”), similarly, these photons, called cubits, can hold a value of 1 and 0 at the same time. The order of 1’s and 0’s signifies a definite quantity of information. So, the smallest diamond ring in the world may become the medium for the greater discoveries.

Segundo estudo publicado pela revista 'Nano Letters', os pesquisadores Ted Sargent e Qiying Chen, da Universidade de Toronto, usaram um feixe de laser para direcionar outro feixe, com um controle sem precedentes. O feito é especialmente importante para futuras redes de fibras ópticas."
