Nvidia reveals the personal supercomputer News TechRadar UK: "Harnessing the power of the GPU beyond just basic graphics output has been inevitably bigged-up by Nvidia as the next big computing leap. Such confidence has it that general processing GPUs (GPGPUs) will be in everyone's PC of the future that it has released a range of high-end GPU-based plug-in cards under the name Tesla.
The numbers make for compelling reading with the latest 10-series products in Nvidia's Tesla range quoting up to 960 cores and up to 4 teraflops of performance. Before you get all over-excited though, the cores referred to are in fact shader processor threads.
Unless your chosen application runs optimally under an accelerated floating point environment, you won't see much of Nvidia's quoted '250 times the computing performance of a PC'. That said, Nvidia's CUDA programming environment (see below) is designed to tap into Tesla's specifically designed architecture and start the ball rolling for the next generation of mainstream application development."

Concepts have been out there to lure the eye, but this is perhaps the one of its kind that challenges the power and durance. It’s a concept supercomputer designed on the Intel’s atom processor, called the new SGI Molecule. It touts of 10,000 cores, which is about 40 times more than a 1U x86 cluster system, packed into a single computer. The Silicon Graphics Molecule concept supercomputer designed around an Intel Atom N330 chip and Kelvin cooling technology, houses memory bandwidth of more than 750 high-end PCs, with 15TB/sec of memory bandwidth per rack, in a size of a normal PC."

Cray Partners With Microsoft To Launch CX1 Supercomputer - Gizmo Watch: "Very soon, we are going to see a really awesome supercomputer CX1, which would run on upcoming Windows HPC Server 2008. The greatest ability of this supercomputer has to be its capacity to multitask. Cray has teamed up with Microsoft for this cool product. The CX1 would have 16 Intel Xeon processors and you could choose between dual or quad core. This means you would have a processor that could have 64 cores! The 8 supercomputing nodes accommodate 64GB of memory per node and the internal storage of 4TB is simply unbelievable."

Estadao.com.br :: Tecnologia :: Governo dos EUA terá computador mais rápido do mundo: "WASHINGTON - Um computador projetado para executar testes virtuais das armas nucleares dos Estados Unidos será o mais rápido do mundo, executando 1.000 trilhões de cálculos por segundo, anunciou o Departamento de Energia do governo norte-americano nesta segunda-feira, 9.

O Roadrunner, da IBM, foi instalado no Laboratório Nacional de Los Alamos, no Novo México, e é o primeiro a alcançar a marca conhecida como petaflop de performance sustentada, informaram o departamento e a IBM.

'Para colocar isso em perspectiva, se cada uma das 6 bilhões de pessoas da Terra tivesse uma calculadora para trabalhar em conjunto em um cálculo 24 horas por dia, 365 dias por ano, seria necessário 46 anos para fazer o que o Roadrunner é capaz de fazer em um dia', afirmou o departamento.

'Flop' é um termo relativo a operações de ponto flutuante por segundo. Um petaflop equivale a 1.000 trilhões de cálculos por segundo.

'O Roadrunner será usado pelo Administração Nacional de Segurança Nuclear do Departamento de Energia para executar cálculos que melhoraram em muito a capacidade de nos certificar de que os estoques de armas nucleares dos EUA são confiáveis sem a necessidade de se executar testes nucleares subterrâneos', informou o departamento em nota à imprensa.

'O Roadrunner não somente terá um papel importante na manutenção do papel nuclear dos EUA, e também vai contribuir para resolver nossos desafios globais de energia e abrir novas janelas de conhecimento em campos de pesquisa científica', acrescentou o departamento."

Roadrunner Creates New Record In Processing - Gizmo Watch: "runs fast, very fast. The supercomputer has surpassed the quadrillion calculations record of IBM’s Bluegene/L processor by ensuring 1.026 quadrillion calculations per seconds. It is now world’s first high speed super computer used by US military for nuclear purposes.
The supercomputer uses 12,960 Cell processors, which are actually designed for Sony’s PlayStation 3 video-game machine and Opteron processors from AMD used in corporate servers.
As of now, the supercomputer will be used to ease scientific problems like climate change as the high speed of the machine will enable scientists to test global climate models with accuracy.
It can also be used for confidential military projects such as simulating nuclear explosions, which is a lot safer than letting real ones off. The price of the supercomputer is nearly $133 million.
Developed jointly by IBM and Los Alamos Laboratories, the supercomputer has the potentiality to calculate in one day what six billion population will take 46 years, working round the clock all the time.
