Soldiers will be able to see through walls of buildings, thanks to the Masthead UrbanlSTAR System. Based on infrared laser technology called LIDAR (Light Intensity Direction and Ranging), the system will provide soldiers with 3-D maps of a building. The UrbanlSTAR system combines thermal imaging and X-ray backscatter techniques to develop 3-D images of buildings, streets, etc. The LIDAR sensors, along with a radar, gather information about people and objects inside concrete walls, and create 3-D maps based on the information. The system can be carried on a military vehicle, an undercover civilian 4×4, or a plane. The images would help army personnel plan covert operations with a high degree of predictability. They can view and identify the size of doors, windows, etc. and plan the exercise with millimeter accuracy. The system can also be used for security in stadiums, theatres, etc.
